Juggling the roles of parent, spouse, and work is usually hard enough. But now, as the pandemic continues, parents are called to add many more – teacher, counselor, tech support, Bible class teacher, and the list could probably go on and on. Times are difficult families! How do we manage all of these roles and maintain our sanity?
Oh, how I wish I knew all the answers! But, I don’t! However, I cling to what I do know right now during a time of great uncertainty. Here it is:
“Love the Lord Your God with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind and love your neighbor as yourself.” Luke 10:27
So, how do I use this truth to guide me through this difficult time? Perhaps, we could dwell on this verse instead of dwelling on the many hats (and masks) we have to wear right now. Instead of worrying about how we are going to “get it all done,” focus on putting our strength in God to carry us through. And, oh, how I am speaking to myself right now! Easier said than done, right?
Families, this is why it is so important that we continue to lean into Biblical truths and our Christian family for support. So as we look at becoming the “Bible Class Teacher” at home right now, instead of worrying we are doing it wrong or not enough or just can’t even possibly think about adding something else, let’s look at this truth:
“…choose for this day whom you will serve… But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” Joshua 24:15
And, now, let’s lean on each other for support in carrying this truth out. How we carry this out in each home is going to look a little different and that is great! But we want to encourage each other in our efforts and share our ideas with one another. Lean into your small group or Bible class group, or even talk to a minister.
Please know that as Children’s Minister, I see my role especially right now, in helping to equip you to provide Biblical instruction at home with your families. That’s why I have several great opportunities coming up for you – not to add more to your plate but provide support and encouragement at convenient times for families. Believe me, I understand how Zoom meetings go with children (one of my children may like to stand on his head and tackle his parents the entire time!), and I am hoping to offer times that work around those obstacles (children).
The first is a study over the book, In This House We Will Giggle by Courtney DeFeo beginning August 4th - This will have two components: 1) a monthly webinar where a different virtue will be presented with very practical and applicable ways you can teach this at home through your everyday activities with your children, and 2) a follow-up Zoom discussion at the end of the month, which will allow families to dialogue over what worked, what didn’t, and provide encouragement to one another.
The second will be an 8-week study beginning in September over Sticky Faith by Powell and Clark. Matthew Morgan and I will coordinate this with help from our Southside families who again can give practical and applicable approaches to developing faith in the home. Look for more information coming soon on this study.
You can sign up for these webinars (and others) at tinyurl.com/southsideonline
Families, I pray for you daily, and please know that I am here to help you however I can. Please do not hesitate to reach out and let me know what I can do to help support your families. Please prayerfully consider both of these upcoming opportunities to learn and encourage others.
