Twas the Night Before the Election

Twas the Night Before the Election, and all through the land
Not a politician was stirring, not even a band
The signs had been placed on the street corners with care
In hopes that a voter would soon be there
The citizens were nestled all snug in their beds
With visions of a political victory dancing in their heads
And my wife with her blanket, and I in my jacket
Had just settled our mind from the political racket
When out on the lawn, there arose such a clatter
I sprang from my bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the window, I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.
When what to my wondering eyes did appear
But my Risen Lord who had come near.
He came with a message for me to receive
I knew in a moment it was something to believe
A word of truth during this difficult time
A Balm of peace for my troubled mind
He spoke calmly and gently but with fervor and might,
“Greetings my child, on this most interesting night.
I hear that a new leader will be elected.
But I came to remind you who has been resurrected!
Long before this nation began and long after it is gone
My Father reigns in heaven like the rising dawn
Don’t worry about tomorrow whatever fate may fall.
The church will stand. The mission will call.
My Spirit is with you so you need not fear
This world belongs to my Father, whatever you may hear.
So be faithful, take courage, and spread selfless love.
Demonstrate your kindness from God above
That is more powerful than any political maneuver
It humbles the strong and shakes the mover
Trust in Me and I will guide your path
Follow Me and find mercy, not wrath.”
With that He was finished and I turned around.
I felt my heart beating with a great pound.
I laughed to myself as I heard His powerful word.
I knew that I had been convicted as if by a sword.
I realized my allegiance is not to a donkey but to a Lamb.
It is not for the elephant, but the great I AM!
As quickly as he came, he began to leave.
I became sad as He left for I wanted to cleave.
But He reminded me that He is coming back.
And as He left, He announced with great tact,
“May the God be with you this very night,
For He is truly Lord.” And that is right!
