There are five main areas of my ministry as Discipleship Minister:
1) Small Groups: where we as a church family, share life in community
2) Adult Education: our Sunday AM and Wednesday PM classes and groups
3) Soul Care: targeted discipleship groups and classes to bring healing to sin and pain
4) Special Discipleship Events: Seminars, Spiritual Discipline Retreats, Training Events, etc.
5) Mentoring: Discipleship through relationships
Today, I want to talk about Small Groups. At Southside, we want to bring others into a life-changing relationship with Jesus, and we believe that sustained life change happens best in the context of community. Small Groups are critical to our goal that every man, woman, child, and family experience the transformation that happens when we share our lives in Christian community. In short, when someone becomes a Partner in the Gospel at Southside, an aspect of that “partnering” is sharing your life in community.
1 Thessalonians 2:8 says, “So we cared for you. Because we loved you so much, we were delighted to share with you not only the gospel of God but our lives as well.” It’s hard to share your life with 500 people, so we gather in Small Groups. Within these groups, each person can be personally equipped, care for one another, and experience true discipleship as they grow deeper in their relationship with God.
On February 9th, we will kick-off Small Groups 2020. The Small Groups kick-off event will be in the Fellowship Hall at 6pm that Sunday, and it will be a chance for existing groups to spend time together, new groups to meet one another, and those without a group to find one to join.
Most of the groups from last year will continue to meet and deepen their relationships built in previous years, and we will have new groups starting as well. We want everybody to be part of a Small Group.
If you are not already in a small group, or if you are interested in leading a new group, please fill out a Small Group card and return it to Chris Jeter or me (You can also drop it in the collection plate or bins at the front of the auditorium). Visit sscofc.org/smallgroups to learn more or sign up online.
We are praying that God will use our Small Groups to bring life change and spiritual friendship to every Partner in the Gospel at Southside!
