Being Ready When the Call Comes

By November 16, 2017No Comments

I’m embarrassed to say, it’s happened to me more than once… During the AM hours, I am awake but lazy, piddling around the house, watching TV in my pajamas, wondering what to eat for breakfast. And then a call comes — someone needs my help, or I’ve forgotten about a breakfast meeting, or for some other reason I need to get moving quickly, but I’m not ready…

Maybe it’s happened to you too. Maybe you’re enjoying a rare morning that the kids are sleeping in, or maybe you’re intensely at work on a project or assignment, or maybe you’re at the store with a cart full of groceries. And the call comes. You need to be doing something else, but you’re not ready.

Sometimes this call is much more severe than others, but it’s never the end of the world. Nevertheless, don’t you feel a bit upset that someone called on you, and you weren’t able to respond to the need because you weren’t ready? I know there are a lot of complexities with this sort of situation, I think we can agree that it would be nice if you could be ready and prepared any time a call comes.

Sometimes it’s just not possible to be ready, but other times, we can prepare in advance, even if we don’t know what the call will be. Such is the case with our Called to Light giving, which prepares us to respond to God’s calling whenever it is discerned and wherever it calls us to. God may want us to take the Gospel across the globe, or across the street. He may call us to a mission field that is well-established, or he may invite us to embark on something entirely new and different.

We don’t know where God will call us, but our faith demands that we prepare for whatever the call is, whenever it comes. That may mean preparing mentally, emotionally, physically, or geographically. With the Called to Light offering, we aim to prepare financially, so that we can truly be the body of Christ to those near and far, and we can be ready when the call comes. I encourage you to keep this in mind as you contribute to this special offering on Sunday morning.
